Pilates Matwork classes

Since Joseph Pilates first published his matwork exercises in the 1940s, many of which are very challenging, the repertoire has evolved. A true Pilates matwork class should include some of his original exercises to merit the name Pilates but generally will include some more gentle warm-up exercises and stretches. In matwork in particular Pilates classes are constantly developing as different teachers introduce ideas from a variety of different disciplines. Some classes may involve elements of yoga and tai chi, amongst others, but the basic principles of pilates will inform the whole class.

The focus of pilates matwork classes should be on creating balance in the body, strengthening the core postural muscles and working on stability and co-ordination. Unlike the studio classes, matwork classes use your body weight to provide the resistance that your muscles work against. They do not involve any equipment though sometimes small props such as yoga blocks or soft balls may be used.

To ensure the best results for all participants class sizes are limited to eight. We do offer drop-in classes, though we recommend booking in advance to guarantee your place in your chosen class.
